Second Screen Adds to Super Bowl Excitement

Advertisers and social media create an enhanced game day viewing experience.

The most popular TV event of the year – the Super Bowl – is just days away. But this yearly spectacle isn’t just about the game; it’s about the commercials too. In fact, last year’s Super Bowl featured more than 46 minutes of commercials, the second largest amount ever, according to Kantar Media.

For viewers tuning into the big game to watch the advertisements, a second screen, such as a tablet, can enhance the Super Bowl-watching experience. With a second screen, viewers can tweet about their favorite commercials, visit an advertiser’s Facebook page, or engage other spectators on GetGlue in game day conversation.

During this year’s game, big brands are using interactive commercials to get audiences involved. For example, Star Trek fans can download an app to unlock exclusive Star Trek Into Darkness movie content and enter a contest during the movie’s Super Bowl commercial. Coca Cola fans will be able to vote for how they want the company’s commercial to end.

Hulu has even created a new Super Bowl AdZone where fans will be able to watch the commercials on a second screen laptop, tablet or smartphone in real time and then re-watch, vote for and share their favorite commercials on social networks. After the game, Hulu will announce the best commercials chosen by viewers.

This year, complement the Super Bowl game- and commercial-watching experience with a second screen.
